Abandonment everywhere
Days of Abandonment, by Elena Ferrante, is a visceral and impactful story. It moved me to my core. If you are a woman, you will certainly feel empathy. There will be moments when you feel sorry and want to take in the main character of this story, Olga. But at other you'll want to shake her and shout: wake up! But there is no room for judgment here.
A book that made me think and, by the end, left me tired. Physically. Exhausted. With an almost clichéd plot, Elena Ferrante knocked me out with the rawness and strength of the feelings narrated. One day at lunchtime, the protagonist's husband decides to leave home after 15 years of marriage.
"One afternoon in April, just after lunch, my husband told me he wanted to leave me. He did this while we were clearing the table, the children fighting as usual in another room. The dog was grumbling next to the heater"
Mário, her husband, said it like that, as if he was telling her how his day at work had gone. With this sentence alone, the author manages to give the reader a glimpse of what life will be like for this character after this separation, carrying all the responsibilities built up by the couple on her back. And that's very cruel. And, obviously, what we find in this book is Olga's complete emotional and mental lack of control. She doesn't have time to suffer and absorb the unexpected situation. At least she saw it that way.
The narrative is in the first person, so we know this story from Olga's point of view, which may not be reliable, but it makes us immerse ourselves in her pain.
